Good morning Australia, and welcome to live coverage of UFC 160, coming to you from yours truly, who's sitting Octagon-side at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
This is without a doubt the most significant UFC card yet in terms of Australian fighters pushing their claims for world title shots. While the UFC 160 card is headlined by the heavyweight title bout between the champion, Cain Velasquez, and the challenger, Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, most interest from an Australian and New Zealand point of view centres around the support card.
Our very own Cinderella Man, Mark Hunt, will attempt to continue to unlikely charge towards the UFC heavyweight title when he takes on former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos in the co-main event of the evening. Hunt is a big underdog, but — with his huge power shots and granite chin — is capable of destroying any opponent in the UFC today.
Penrith-based Kiwi Jamie Te Huna takes on probably the most hyped fighter to enter the UFC in the past couple of years, the Brazilian Glover Teixeira, who's on an eight-year, 18-fight winning streak. That's a huge challenge for Te Huna, but he has a secret weapon in his corner — the IBO cruiserweight world champion, Danny Green.
And on the preliminary card, we finally get to see The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes welterweight winner, Robert Whittaker, in his first contracted fight in the UFC. It's no easy assignment for the Sydney knock-out artist, though ... he's up against a real grinder in The Ultimate Fighter season 16 winner, Colton Smith. Like Te Huna, Whittaker also has a secret weapon, though ... he's been training at Georges St-Pierre's Tristar Gym to get specific preparation for his opponent.
We'll be live here from the MGM Grand for the next seven hours or so ... so feel free to join the conversation by leaving a comment (link at the top of the page) and make sure you send us your predictions for the fights!
